AMTRON is a major promoter of Free and Open Source Technology (FOSS) and has played a significant role in the areas of developing and boosting up open source technologies.

AMTRON has developed key strength in implementing solutions based on open source technologies. For last few years a hardworking and experienced team of software developers at AMTRON is developing software and providing solutions using open source technologies for various organizations of North East India. The "Electronic Document Approval System" developed in AMTRON using open source tools was highly appreciated as the major step towards e-governance for which AMTRON received the 'World is Open Award 2008' jointly sponsored by SKOCH and REDHAT. Apart from software development and solutions, AMTRON has also developed tools and technologies on GIS and VoIP using open source.

In order to popularize and promote open source, AMTRON has organized several conferences, workshops, competitions and other promotional events. AMTRON is celebrating Document Freedom Day for couple of years. For awareness and making opens source tools popular among student community of Assam, AMTRON has sponsored institutions like Assam Engineering College, Jorhat Engineering College, Donbosco College of Engineering and Technology, Guwahati for organizing workshops on Open Source tools.
